San Jose Sigmoidoscopy
Trustworthy Medical Care at San Jose Gastroenterology
A sigmoidoscopy is a procedure performed in order to examine the sigmoid, which is the area of the lower part of your colon and rectum. This procedure is done using a thin, flexible scope that is inserted into the colon itself, and provides images and feedback about complications and abnormalities that you may be experiencing.
At San Jose Gastroenterology, our team of experienced San Jose gastroenterology doctors has over 12 years of in-depth experience with providing outstanding diagnostic and treatment care for our patients. If you have been referred to our office for a sigmoidoscopy, we encourage you to contact our office today and schedule your appointment as soon as possible.

What to Expect During Your Procedure
A sigmoidoscopy is completed in-office and is considered an out-patient procedure, which generally means that you can go home on the same day. Sigmoidoscopies are considered safe, but you should not have the procedure done if you have a known pregnancy, heart or lung complication, or if you have a condition that is being monitored by a doctor.
During the procedure, you may expect:
- To be asked to lay on your left side.
- A mild sedative may be given to help relax you.
- A sigmoidoscope will be passed through your rectum and into your colon.
- The sigmoidoscope will use air to inflate the colon and allow the doctor to see all tissue and walls.
- Images will be transferred to the doctor and a diagnosis may be completed at that time.
